Hardship License

Illinois Suspended License Lawyer

Grayslake DUI Defense Lawyer

If your driver's license has been revoked by the state of Illinois due to a conviction for driving under the influence (DUI), it is more than just inconvenient. In our vehicle-dependent society, it can really disrupt your life when you don't have a valid license but must somehow get to work, school or medical appointments. For this reason, the law allows for the possibility of a restricted driving permit − otherwise known as a hardship license − under certain circumstances.

At Jerald Novak & Associates, I have helped thousands of people obtain hardship licenses and get their driving privileges restored at reinstatement hearings. I have an in-depth understanding of the process, and am well versed in the expectations set by the Secretary of State's office. I have written a book specifically on these hearings called: Secretary of State Guide to Driver's License Reinstatement.

Call me, Jerry Novak, at 847-223-2285 for a free consultation or contact my office online. My firm serves clients throughout Will County, DuPage County, northern Lake County, and Cook County, Illinois.

The Difference Between Revocation and Suspension

In Illinois, getting your license back after it has been revoked involves more than paying a reinstatement fee. Unlike a suspended license, which you can count on getting back after a specified period of time, regaining a revoked license requires a hearing with the Secretary of State. At this hearing, you will have to show that reinstating your license is in the interest of public safety. The vast majority of people who attend these hearings without a qualified Illinois DUI/DWI defense lawyer are denied.

Grounds for a Hardship License

My law firm provides the skilled guidance you need to make an effective case at your first hearing. These probationary permits are granted mainly for three purposes:

  • Work
  • Education/treatment − including attendance at AA meetings
  • Medical reasons

If you drive on the hardship license successfully for a specified period of time - typically nine months - you will be in good position to request a full license reinstatement. We are very familiar with these procedures and the necessary criteria to put on successful hearings at the Secretary of State's office. We have obtained driving relief for many people who have multiple DUI offenses as well as people who have served time in prison for their DUI offenses.
